Rules by visitor’s region
A different banner for Europe, the United States, Canada, Brazil and everywhere else.
Privacy laws differ by where the visitor is. Europe expects people to say yes before tracking starts, while US state laws mostly let analytics run and give people a way to opt out. Rules by visitor’s region lets you give each group the banner its own law expects, instead of one banner for everyone.
Set it up
- Open GoConsent › Consent and scroll down to the Rules by visitor’s region card.
- Pick a rule for each region. Changes save instantly.
- Every region starts on Use site settings, so nothing changes until you choose.
The four rules
- Use site settings: the free behavior, from the Protection toggles above. For Europe, that means Stricter defaults for EU & UK visitors.
- Opt-in: everything waits for a yes: analytics, marketing and maps & videos stay off until the visitor agrees.
- Banner, analytics from the first page: the banner shows and privacy-friendly analytics count visits from the first page. Marketing waits for a yes.
- No banner (opt-out link only): no banner, analytics runs, marketing stays off, and Your Privacy Choices stays available.
Which rules each region offers
- Europe (EU, EEA, UK, Switzerland): Use site settings or Opt-in only, because GDPR and the ePrivacy rules require opt-in.
- United States: all four. US state laws such as the CCPA are opt-out: ads must stop on request or a Global Privacy Control signal.
- Canada and Brazil: every rule except No banner. GoConsent suggests Opt-in for both: Quebec’s Law 25 expects tracking off until the visitor agrees (see also PIPEDA), and under Brazil’s LGPD, opt-in is the safe choice for cookies that aren’t needed.
- Everywhere else: all four. This covers visitors whose region isn’t listed above.
When “No banner” isn’t available
No banner is only offered while your latest scan finds no advertising tags and no session recording tools, and there has to be a scan first. If it’s greyed out, the card lists what the scan found. If you already chose No banner and a later scan finds an ad tag, those visitors automatically get Banner, analytics from the first page instead.
How the region is worked out
The region comes from the time zone set in the visitor’s browser, read in their browser. There’s no IP lookup, nothing is sent anywhere, and it works behind page caches. A time zone GoConsent doesn’t recognize counts as Everywhere else.
Global Privacy Control is honored in every region while Honor Global Privacy Control is on (it is by default).
These rules set how visitors are asked. They aren’t legal advice, so check with your lawyer which rule fits your business. For the other Consent tab settings, see Banner and protection settings.
