Keep policies up to date
How policy page updates work, what GoConsent changes and how to undo a change. It never rewrites a page without your OK.
Your site changes: a new plugin adds a pixel, or you start serving another state. GoConsent writes your policy pages from your settings and your latest scan, so its suggested text changes with them. It never rewrites a page on its own: you see what would change, and you choose.
How you know a page needs updating
- On the Tools tab, each page’s card shows its status: Up to date, Update available, Your own text (a page GoConsent didn’t write), Draft or Not created.
- Your site is scanned every day, so a new tracker shows up in the suggested text after the next scan.
- The Overview lists anything your privacy policy is missing, such as how you respond to browser privacy signals. The Privacy Policy card on the Tools tab shows how many of these wording items are open.
- The Overview also tells you when your privacy policy hasn’t been updated in over a year.
Update a page
- On the Tools tab, click Update on the page’s card.
- A preview lists every change as a checkbox: Add, Update, Use GoConsent text or Remove. Untick anything you don’t want; the page below shows the result.
- Confirm. What you unticked isn’t offered again until you tick it.
What an update changes, and what it keeps
- Only GoConsent’s own sections. Text you added around them is kept.
- Sections you edited yourself stay as you wrote them. The preview lists them as “You edited this section”, unticked. Tick one only if you want GoConsent’s text back.
- A page with Your own text has a Replace text… button instead. The preview says whether GoConsent will keep your text and add only what’s missing, or replace it. Either way you can undo it.
- Your business name, website address, privacy email, contact link and “last updated” date are dynamic codes, so they stay current without an update. The cookie table on your Cookie Policy is filled from your latest scan each time the page loads.
Undo a change
Undo last change on a page’s card puts the page back as it was before GoConsent’s last update. It goes back one step: GoConsent keeps one earlier copy of each page it changes.
Page builders
GoConsent updates pages built with the block editor, the classic editor, Elementor and Beaver Builder (which need a Text Editor block to write into). For any other builder, open Preview, click Copy HTML and paste it into a Text or HTML block.
With GoConsent Pro
- When a published page’s text changes, returning visitors see a short “We updated our…” notice with a link, for 30 days. Stop it for one page with “Don’t tell visitors” on its card, or turn it off with “Tell visitors when a policy changes” in Settings › Policy & alerts.
- Every published version is saved with its dates. See Policy history.
- When a new privacy law starts to likely apply, new wording is prepared for you to approve. See Approve policy updates for law changes.
Review at least once a year
California’s privacy law (CCPA) asks businesses it covers to update their privacy policy at least every 12 months. Set a yearly reminder to preview each page on the Tools tab, and have a lawyer look over any changes.
